Music and your age....

I was going to post this on the Music forum but thought it probably deserved a wider audeince.

A simple question: Should older people like younger bands?

I have just turned 50 and although I like most of the 70's bands I grew up with my favourite bands are probably more recent - Radiohead, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Porcupine Tree, Muse and Tool being some of them.

I have 2 teenagers the elder I've introduced to Muse, Tool and Porcupine Tree and sometimes they think this is cool - at other times they accuse me of being too trendy!

Any of you who know me will know I'm anything but trendy! Certainly from the dress sense if nothing else. However music to me is boundaryless and should not group people. Depending on mood, I can listen to Bach one night, 70s rock the next, flamenco the next and Porcupine Tree the night after. More often a mix each night. Its completely mood dominated - nothing to do with age.

Anyone experiencing something similar?

Music needn't be age related, I like classical and opera but I'm not 400 years old, (though I do feel it sometimes ).

lol thats nothing, I found out tonight a chap who is also a new instructor with the cadets likes Breed 77. He used to be captain in the Navy and is well into his 50's if not older lol!

I think you've got decent taste in music for an older person. It makes me smile when music I like reaches out to an older generation.

When I went to see Metallica in Wembley Stadium a couple of years ago, there were a lot of older people at that gig and a lot of them didn't look like your typical older Metallica fan. If you like music, you like it

Music certainly has not got any age boundaries.
I too listen to anything that makes me feel good. My ipod has tunes ranging from Marilyn Manson to Dolly Partan. Only last month me and my daughter went to see N-Dubz, na na niii........... this year I have seen Pink, Beyonce,Coldplay and am away to see Fleetwood Mac in a fortnight.
Last year I saw Def Leppard, Whitesnake and Journey

I see my favourite band Muse in there! GENIUS!

Anyways, does it matter what age you are and what music you like? I like alot of old stuff from 60's to the 80's. Some 50's music i like too! And im only 21!

Favourite bands though are Muse, Breaking Benjamin (Gizmo showed me the light to them), System of a Down and Red. (add in there The Supremes!)

Music Tastes vary with age - but IMHO the last 10 years have been dire for musical output. The further back you go the closer you get to the motherload.....which for me (with a "guitaristic" bent) is Django Rienhardt.

I can't say I listen to much modern music. There's no comparison really when you're listening to the likes of Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, BB King & my favourite just now is Ali de Meola.

The majority of the music I listen to is pre-79 & I'm in my mid twenties. I feel music is there for everybody, regardless of age.

I'm of a certain age now, with 5 grandchildren, and my taste in music has not really changed much. I have never liked pop music, neither back then nor now. I'm a heavy rocker, was into progressive music, and like a bit of blues.

Back in the day I liked bands like Ten Years After (with the fabulous Alvin Lee), Steel Mill, Glasgow band Beggars Opera (still have my Pathfinder album), Cream, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, the late Tim Rose, Joe Cocker, (the only guy who does cover versions better than the originals), AC/DC, the late, great Janis Joplin, the enigmatic Frank Zappa, and the one and only Leonard Cohen, to name but a few.

Today I add to my list Rammstein, Tool, Muse, Marilyn Manson, Linkin Park, Metallica, Seasick Steve, Pearl Jam, and Robert Cray, again to name but a few.

The music industry has changed a bit over time, with the addition of Rap and things like that, but like back then, there is good and bad music on the market, and I'm sure if you look, there is music out there today to appeal to whatever your taste or age may be.

When i was younger i could name everyband going in the charts now i cant i like music betrween sixties and eightys best but there is a few modern groups i like.

In the 70s I used to go and see Barclay James Harvest, and felt quite annoyed at a review in the Uni student paper that called them "a Radio 2 Pink Floyd". Now if you want to hear Pink Floyd themselves, you have to go to Radio 2. What does that do for all the people who used to listen to Radio 2 for James Last and Mantovani etc.? I suppose they either died or listen to their old records.

My tastes in music span the ages too. My latest find in newer stuff is Imogen Heap. She is playing in LA soon but I have to be somewhere else that night unfortunately.

I am going to see Bowling For Soup next week in Glasgow - seen them 4 times previously. It does feel odd being older than some parents accompanying their kids!
