Broadband Speeds In Wick??

I have just moved house (again) and after an initial check on my line i have been informed that the max speed i can expect is 0.5mbps, i just cannot understand how this can be right, i have only moved about a 100 meters from my old address where i was getting 5.5mbps, this is all in the hillhead area of Wick, surely the speed difference from street to street in wick cannot fluctuate that much??...can anyone shed any light on this??

Is anyone else in Wick getting such a rubbish speed?

Its all to do with the length of the line the distance might be 100 m in one direction but the cable may run underground and take another route making the 100 m far greater which will give you a lower connection speed however unless you are right at the threshold of getting broadband (about 6 - 7 miles) i would have thought that you will get more than the 0.5 mb my uncle is in willowbank beside the school and he gets about 5.5 of the top of my head

If i hover over my icon it states 8.1mb download speed, BUT when i run broadband speed tests it averages out at 5/6mb.
You cant always believe your ISP.
I used to work for BT and alot of factors come into consideration, length of line,quality of cable for connection,router,TCP/IP settings etc.
There is alot that can be done to increase speed just takes a wee bit of tinkering.
There is a program that will optimise your connection but the name escapes me, will post when I can remember

My ISP has told me to ignore the BT checkers, apparently they are not very reliable or accurate, i have checked neighbours telephone numbers and they came back as being able to get 5/6 meg, i did the check while plugged into the master socket, and also the test socket, the BT junction box on the pole outside my house looks pretty old and battered, maybe thats the problem.

Pick the yellow server in Maidenhead.

I'm in Thrumster and average between 5500 kb/s and 6500 kb/s. Nearly always at 384 upload. That's with a BB max connection with Plusnet. On a max connection you rairly get full whack due to all of the factors mentioned above: line quality, distance etc and also contention on your exchange. If you get 8Mb out of a max connection you are doing very well.

I have not moved house but I have gone from 5.2Mbps to 3 and lower with no explanation. It is fast enough for me but I did wonder why it slowed down, good to know I am not alone but am sorry for the folk who are getting really slow speeds.

i was promised 4.5 by BT i get 1.5 during the day on average and 4.5 after 11pm any suggestions what can help would be greatfully recieved.

You're using the Dublin server, don't. It may be closer geographically, but your ISP's servers are very much likely to be somewhere in the middle of England.

OK, whenever you see ADSL max being advertised it will always say "up to 8mbps", it will never be advertised as a constant rate just because of the technology being implemented. BT use IP profiles for connections, the profile you get depends on how fast a connection your line can handle before cutting out due to noise. Your download speed will never go faster than the IP profile you are allocated. The best IP profile you can get on BT is 7150 kbps (which I have). Even then you will only get those speeds if you live next door to the exchange.

Well so much for those BT Speed Checkers, they said i could only get a speed of 0.5meg, well today my broadband went live and i am connecting at 5.3meg, thats also the quickest i have ever seen a broadband connection get switched on, i only signed up on tuesday evening and was told it wouldnt be live until next wednesday....but today my little green DSL light came on and i'm now back in the fast lane....thank god aswell...56k dial-up was driving me bonkers.
