Seaguls

Hi

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but we need some help.

We live in Thurso and all day long we get seaguls up on our roof, on the fence swirving down towards the cats or our children,

as soon as our back door is open they come in the house and eat the cat food..!!! i got a big fright when i seen a seagul eating my cats food in the house...

we eat a lot outside on the patio and the seaguls congregrate on the roofs, but WE NEVER leave any food out for them or encourage them to come to our garden.

they are a real nusiance getting especially at 5 in the morning

Now there is a baby seagul which sits on a neighbours roof and screams all day long.

does anyone have any ideas how we can stop them or shoo them away?

The gulls over here in Sutherland are better behaved. You must have 'yob gulls'.

As far as the gulls are concerned, you are getting too close to their nice, safe clifftop area. They're always worse when they've got young ones as they are 'protecting' their offspring/patch.

Frankly, there's not much you can do about herring gulls in coastal areas - goes with the territory!

Get rid of the cats instead?

If you're patient, they'll leave any time now! The young are big enough to fly now and the parents will take them away as soon as possible. Make sure there's no food available to encourage them to stay, if the neighbours are putting out food ask them to stop until the gulls have left the area.

We had a problem with a gull once.

When we left the back door open during the summer, the gull would come in and start eating whatever it could find.

It was a bit of a struggle, but eventually we convinced the gull to sit at the table with us and have proper meals instead of snacking all day. Unfortunately the gull became more demanding, first it wanted clean napkins at every mealtime, then it complained about the television being on during meals and finally it stomped off in a sulk after we refused to become vegans.

We didn't see it again for about 6 months, until about 2 weeks ago when we took some friends for a meal at Mackays Hotel. As soon as we walked in we could hear the gull, who was sat with a family at the other end of the restaurant, complaining loudly that the Sancerre was corked and that the scallops were overcooked.

Throughout the evening the gull became louder the more it drank. Eventually it was escorted from the premises by the police after challenging the 16 year old waitress to a fight.

Yup, those gulls can be a real dam' nuisance...
