when is the best time to sow new grass seed?

Mid spring (April-May) and mid autumn (September-early October). It takes 4-6 months before you have a usable lawn,so most people sow in autumn.

It gives new grass a whole winter to turn into a proper lawn before heavy demands are made on it. It also means rainfall keeps grass seed watered, weeds also less prevalent.
