Thread: framing out stone wall - best technique

  1. #1

Question framing out stone wall - best technique

What's the best way to fasten a wood frame to a stone wall?
    Traditional wooden wedges?
    Frame fixings? (e.g. http://www.screwfix.com/p/rawlplug-f...ck-of-50/73615)
    Some other technique?

    That should do OK.

The advantage of the wedges (the old name was "dooks" and the tool for making the hole in the mortar and then hammering them in was a "dooking iron") is that you don't have to drill into stone. Depending what kind of stone it is that can be a bit of a pain.
I really hate being bipolar. It's awesome!!!

Dooks are OK. I have used them.
But I remember being warned that they can cause the wall to lean outwards if they are hammered in too far or if they swell through damp - obvious I suppose.
Drilling would be safest - most Caithness stone is easy to drill.

Thanks for all the advice. I am using a mixture of dooks and frame fixings. I'm working at the moment on short walls below a roof so there isn't always somewhere to wedge a dook and doing it too high up means there's no weight in the stone to stop the wedge pushing the stone apart.
I've bought some new frame fixings because the unbranded ones from Screwfix are bad quality.
