    Sabre

The sun was shining upon my head,
But I wasn't lying in my bed,
I went outside and pottered around,
Over the fields and the dew bound ground.

This used to be fun, I thought with pride,
When I could run and jump and frollick and glide,
My eyesight's not great, I can hardly see,
Every step I take there's a creak in my knee.

My toenails are long, my hair is grey,
I spend most days sleeping I am afraid to say,
The babbling brook, the fields, the sun,
I remember them all, each and every one!

My ma she is crying and fussing my neck,
I'm old and I'm dying, I feel like a wreck,
Nice people are here to help me pass by,
Today was a good day to die.

Oh dear, Tuggs. There's nothing I can say, but I'm sure words aren't needed.

Apologies Tuggs - after glancing over the first few lines I was just going to move the post to the Literature forum, then I read on.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Pets quickly become additional members of the family, even though common sense tells us we shouldn't let them, and the sense of loss with a pet - who's often been around as long as, or longer than, the kids - can be difficult to overcome.

    Best wishes to you all

heartfelt condolences to you and your family Tugmistress ! your poem moved me to tears and has had me thinking about my own pets 2 of whom are getting on in years. They may be "just pets" to some but to animal lovers they are family!
