Planting Bushes

When is the best time to plant Hawthorn bushes. I am planning a big buy of them and don`t want them to wither and die as soon as I put them in.

can hawthorn be grown as a single shrub / tree? rather than a hedge or is there a particular type of hawthorn to grow alone?
