A bit of info for you:
The British Market Research Bureau provided the first indepentandly prepared chart compilation in 1969. Before that the singles charts were compiled by various music trade papers. The BBC compiled it's own chart based on all the music publications charts.
In other words before 1969 it depended what paper you read as to what was number 1.
