i spotted 6 or 7 large birds flying over castletown at work on friday. They were quite high in the sky so reserve the right to a proper sighting lol. Grey in colour with dark wingtips and long necks. heading over towards thurso/halkirk and think it may have been those cranes from last year on a comeback tour  Anyone else see them?

It was this time of year the 14 Common Cranes appeared at Thuster Mains 3 of which remained in the county for a while, however could they possibly have been Grey Herons?

Sounds like East south East Dafi.
Nirofo may have photos of them in flight to show.

they could have been kas but how often do you see herons flying in formation. i have never seen them fly in that distinctive line formation , even around a heronry. the tend to be solitary birds so dont usually fly like that :D .... Dafi reread the thread and get a map out lol

Hi kas

I do have a few photo's taken a few years ago, not very good unfortunately. They may give you some idea of what they look like however.

yeah that looks like em but they were more or less flying in line, sort of a half v but the wing shape rules out swans and geese

I think I saw one today in Bower. It landed in rough grass so I couldn't observe it in the ground. It was immediatly mobbed from the local rookery but didn't take off again in the 15 minutes I watched.
