how do I look after a poinsettia

Year after year I have tried, without success, to keep poinsettia plants alive and well, with no success! Have tried more, less water, hotter temp, colder temp, more light or less light but somehow they still end up dead. Help!!

I've never heard of anyone that managed to keep one alive.

I recall my grandmother putting her poinsettia inside a cupboard...something about it needing complete darkness for a period of time. Maybe google can help you find the answer.
