The death certificate I have for my ancestor Helen McKenzie nee Bain states that she died at the above address in 1865. I have been unable to find any information on this. Where is it? Is it an area, a street or house? :cool:Can anyone help?

Hi,
could the place you are looking for be Ditch of Osclay.

Try this link http://www.streetmap.co.uk/place/Forse_in_Highland_432611_045611.htm and Scroll north and go up a scale on the map.

Ditch of Osclay lies west of Reisgill burn and east of the Achow to Reisgill single track road.

Hi,

I have a map ref for Ditches of Forse, Latheron. It is:
http://www.nls.uk/maps/os/6inch/view/?sid=74426591

It is an OS 6" to the mile map, Sheet XXXIII, and I think it was drawn and published in the 1870s, so hopefully the "lie of the land" won't have changed much in the decade or so since your relative lived there.

To see Ditches of Forse, you need to enlarge the map (2nd setting from top), click on the hand icon so that you can move around the map smoothly using your computer's arrow keys, then move along the top of the map until you can see 3 21' and 3 20' latitude. Then move straight downwards between these latitudes to Ditches of Forse (it is south of Rumster, north of Nottingham, on the east of the smaller Mill Dam, and west of Moss of Forse. Approx. long. is 58 18' 30"). Ditch of Osclay is on the map also, think it is a bit closer to Blood Moss. I hope you don't find these instructions patronising - I have written them based on how difficult I find it to make my way round a map!

Again, I don't wish to teach my granny how to suck eggs, but have you seen Helen McKenzie's census info? If you are new to genealogy as well as this forum, you'll want to know about FreeCEN, if you don't already use it. http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
I had a quick look and saw Helen McKenzie on the 1861 Census (address listed as Ditch) and 1851 Census (Ditches); some of her family are listed too.

Ditches rang a bell with me because I am trying to find a place called Bualtorran/Bualdorran/Bulnatorran/Boultorran which I think should be on this map but I can't find it... Certainly, Boultorran and Ditches are listed in the same (Census) Enumeration District.

Best wishes,

Scots Bluebell

I am currently transcribing the OPR.s for Latheron and came across this one -
Baptised 18 Mar 1823 William. father - Alexander Mckenzie.
If I come across any more will let you know

Hi amcampbe,

I was looking at newspaper index in www.ambaile.org.uk (http://www.ambaile.org.uk/) and saw the following:

Ditches farm (below Rumster) Forse Estate tenders invited for construction of a dwelling house.
John O'Groat Journal Thursday, 22 June 1876

Probably your Ditches, so worth requesting a copy of this via ambaile, if you don't already have it - or popping into Wick Library for it, if you are local.

Thanks for the link, it look as though this is the correct place and the notation on the death certificate was just another way of saying it. I really appreciate your help.
