View Full Version : E Caithness Midge
Where would I find the words for this poem? I tried a websearch but no luck, was telling my daughter about it and said I would try to find the poem.
Don't know if this is it but here goes did a search and it was on the org
Ye'll meet 'im here, ye'll meet 'im 'ere
By ro'die, park or bridgie,
There's no a pest on a' 'e earth
Can rouse ye lek 'e midgie.
He'll sample baith yer airms and leygs,
He'll mak' ye cross and fidgy,
He'll never let ye rest in peace,
'E tantalizin' midgie.
He's blistered a' ma nose and ears,
Ah'm spreckled lek a pidgie,
I try a smok' til' scer 'im off,
Bit, faith, he's dour, 'e midgie.
'E shepherd herdin' on 'e hill,
'E toff 'at's in 'e lodgie,
'E love affairs o' Jack and Jill,
's attended by 'e midgie.
Ah've sailed 'e seven ragin' seas,
An up 'e Murrimbidgee,
But roch altho' they wir at times,
They're neithing till 'e midgie.
Against 'e fleeag, moose an' clo'k,
Aw hev a vi'lent grudgie,
But blast 'e warst o' insec' trock,
'E tempan, foosum, midgie

How weel I remember the beady eyes and beak nose of the late Donald Grant as he tutoured me in this peom for e' Festival. !954 . Strange then when it came back up in the nineties and my wife had to teach it to her entrants that year. She's from Wigan. It didn't compute so I had to teach it instead. In 1954 I got 87 and in the nineties my pupil got over 90.
I was supposed to do it for the festival in high school but in the end I backed out lol.... you obviously recite it well gleber2 it's good to hear when it's done well.

Could you please translate the last four lines, I am more familiar with the West Coast midgie.

Aw hev a vi'lent grudgie,
But blast 'e warst o' insec' trock,
'E tempan, foosum, midgie
Against the fly, mouse and clock (black beetle)
I have a violent grudge,
But blast the worst of insect rubbish
The annoying, dirty, midgie

E Caithness Midgie is the dialect poem for P4 and under at this years Music Fesitval at the beginning of June. My wee girl is doing it and we are practising like mad just now.
She didn't understand a lot of the words so I had to translate the whole poem for her!
