Hello Everyone,
I'm new to this site & am looking for help with my Campbells who came to Melbourne Victoria, Australia. My great grandfather Willliam arrived with his sister Barbara sailing on the Arabian in 1858. Their parents were given as Colin Campbell & Williamina Campbell who were reported to be cousins. From family info they had 10 children. I found a marriage for them 13 July 1819 from the IGI site.
William was the seventh child born 10th January 1831.
Other children found on IGI site Hugh b.1820, Benjamin b.1822, Elizabeth b.1823, Janet b.1825, Jane b.1827, Barbara b.1829,Robert b.1833, Louisa b. 1835, Hughina b.1840
Siblings Elizabeth & Robert arrived in Victoria on the Hornet October 1854.
Robert was killed in a mining accident at Ballarat in 1861.
Another sister Janet (Jessie) arrived between 1861 & 1863.
I'm looking for info on the remaining children & any info who the parents were of Colin & Williamina, especially if they were cousins.
Thank you for your time
Regards

probably the son of Hugh Campbell and Janet McLeod born in 1788 likely in Melvich.
they also had a son Benjamin 1785 in Melvich - not an extracted record though.

on the 1841 census from FREECEN Williamina(Willmmina) is recorded as 5 years younger than her husband so she could easily have been born anywhere from 1792 -1796.

Only one on the IGI for that time frame in Reay parents William Campbell and Ann Sinclair.

On the FREEREG marriage record Colin is from Melvich and Williamina from Strathy in Farr, Sutherland. However she still could have been born in Reay.

Would I think be difficult to prove they are cousins or not.
Collin(sp?) and Williamina are in Melvich in 1851 - her she is said to be born in Farr, Sutherland c 1795 Colin born c 1789 in Reay - also have son David b c 1836

In 1861 Williamina ( listed as Campbell, Colin(Widow) age 64, born in Farr,is still Melvich but Colin has died. Janet, Jean and Hughina are still at home along with an 80 year old sister in law Jean

In 1871 their son David is married to a Johan with 1yr old son in Melvich. Can't find them for sure after this although there is a David and Johan in Farr in 1901 that might be them.

Williamina does not seem to be in Melvich in 1871. If she died in Scotland between 1861 and 1871 it should be possible to find her death record which ought to record her parents.

If you google FREECEN and FREEREG you should be able to find the records I've mentioned.
For Williamina's death you should look at SCOTLANDSPEOPLE.

They married 1868 in Reay and had 3 children before 1875
Colin 1868
Catherine 1871
Williamina 1873 all in Reay.

The most likely Johan Mckay is the one born c 1839 and ch Feb 21 1839 parents Hugh Mackay and Catherine Mackay. There are so many Mckay/Mackay's in Reay/Farr. I think her family was from Portskerra.

physically in Farr, Sutherland by the way.
Births etc can be registered in Durness or Farr Sutherland or Reay Caithness depending on the time frame.

From a Monumental Inscription

Colin died Feb 7 1852 most likely in Melvich.
The headstone is in Kirkton Melvich cemetary
the stone is also in memory of daughters who died in infancy and son Benjamin died Jul 12 1848 in Aberdeen -drowned while bathing

A picture of the stone is available through www.countysutherland.co.uk

There is a charge to view the pictures but it an one time fee of 6 pounds.
Chris Stokes runs this absolutely fabulous website and an associated mailing list(one of the best). The people here might be able help further.
