Great photo of the heron Kara, I used to have a fish pond in my garden and I still get a nervous twitch everytime I see a heron.:lol:

He helped himself to a breakfast of one of my Israeli silver carp worth over £200.

Cracker Kara. How on earth did you get so close? Even with a long lens I've always managed to spook any heron I've tried to get close to.

Fab photo kara, but I would suggest that you could crop the dead thistle from the left side of the image.

You have a real talent. Some of your pictures are worthy of printing and selling. Have you ever entered any competitions? I thoroughly enjoyed looking at your gallery

thanks for the edit :)
thanks' again for all your comments , as to how i got so close a (500mm lens & also croped a bit of the river ) and i guess he /she just gave up and let me take some photos as i was up and down the river like a yoyo ..the heron then landed across from the boating shed beside the island in the water and then just jumped up on the wall for a wee while then flew back up the river ..
i also have loads of crap one's but i dont show them ...L.O.L

Sorry Deemac, you've upset the balance of the picture by throwing the birds head too far to the left edge of the frame, it needs to be looking into the frame, not looking out.

I don't usually like messing about with someone elses photo, but seeing as the precedent has already been set, here you go. There's not a lot you can do with the actual framing as the shot was already tightly cropped, however, by cropping close to the wing on the right side of the frame and cloning out the dead weeds at the left hand edge I've managed to give the birds head more room for looking out of the frame. I also added bit more room to the top of the frame.

I don't know if Karas original image had more space around the bird, if it had this would give more scope for messing about with the framing. Ideally it would be better if the bird was looking into the frame from the left as this is where the light normally comes from in the northern hemisphere, however the birds don't usually co-operate the way you would like them, (at least they don't for me) and this is a cracking shot anyway.

A great thread which started with a fantastic subject photo and some interesting cropping options.
I am not sure if it was the same Heron, but I did get a video opportunity back in the summer that was spoiled slightly by a squawking kid across the river near to the caravan site.
No children where killed or injured during the making of this film.
