The Butler claimed he polishing the silver.

The police instantly arrested the murdered. Who did it and how did they know?

Bit of a misprint. The police arrested the Murderer, not the murdered.

Reading through the riddle carefully I suggest the maid did it.
Why, because there is no Sunday mail. (Except for the newspaper).
