A friend has a computer and although he can connect to the internet no page will come up. It just says res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdolc.dll/dnserror.htm. anyone help
the error your getting is what we call the dreaded "page cannot be displayed" DNS is your Domain Name Server. Each website you go to has an Internet Protocol (IP) address. You sometimes get this error if you cannot connect to a DNS server.
The problem is most likely that your registry has been corrupted by spyware of some sort.
to fix it try using the winsock xp fix from here

In Internet Explorer click on Tools then Internet Options, under Connections make sure it's set to use the right connection.
If that doesn't work right click on Network Places then right click on the internet connection then click on Properties. Under Networking highlight "Internet Protocol" and click on Properties. Make sure it's set to obtain Nameservers automatically.
