Met a couple from Australia last night as i was walking along the coast, they had driven through Ireland and up through Scotland to Thurso and had never seen scenery like the view across the Penland Firth, they were amazed at the low sunlight, the way it lit up the cliffs of Hoy"You get nothing that comes close to this in Australia mate" was his exact comment.
Yes Oz may be more exotic but maybe we underestimate our own backyard,Northlight
obviously doesn't judging by his marvelous Caithness photos but maybe a few of us dont fully realise the goldmine we actually have on our doorstep.I've always been appreciative of the views we have here but when you here someone from Australia praising them so highly then that really makes me want to make more of them.Whether i do them justice is another matter entirely but it wont be for lack of trying.

No moody photoshopping for a change.

No.2 for me MPH - Lovely composition (though I'd crop out the bottom mossy stone)

I agree, Caithness is a goldmine for the landscape photographer

Those are beautiful photos, MPH! :) I agree it can be easy to take the stunning views in Caithness for granted when you live up there. But I appreciate it all the more since I left, and have travelled and lived abroad. That view across the Pentland Firth is still one of my all time favourites!

Can see yer point Deemac but as the stone goes into the flowers where would one crop it? Mind you, you lot will just shop it out!

Great shots MPH - love the light - yer makin me so homesick!

Scotland has some of the most amazing scenery in the world - not that I have travelled extensively - but I dare say a lot of places would be hard pushed to rival it! :D

mph,

Thanks for the compliment, but remember I am an incomer and hence probably have a slightly different view, having spent most of my life in the south of England near the coast, and being brought up on the East coast of England I have a real love of the coast, when I lived in Hampshire I tried to get to the South West, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, at every opportunity. My first experiences of Scotland were the west coast and the isles of Islay and Jura some twenty five years ago, my ex coming from Islay. My first visit to Caithness was nearly ten years ago, and I fell in love with the place almost immediately, now I am lucky to live here, and yes it really is a bit like a "Child living in a Sweetshop"!

I like the first two very much, and the light in all three is gorgeous.

I do agree with deemac about cropping the rock out of number two, I would have stepped a little to the left which would have let you put the flowers in the bottom rh corner of the photograph.
Keep taking the photos, you are producing some excellent images, and your night time photography is stunning.

Could n't agree more about the quality of the light it's fabulous.
I remember staying at The Weigh Inn many years back in winter and with the angle, the cliffs of Hoy looked like they were on fire.I surprised even myself by the speed with which I reached Victoria Walk to be joined by another lady walking back from Thurso. Her comment was, "It's like magic."

North Light,we're both incomers but i only had to jump across the Pentland Firth from Stromness in 1975 to start my apprenticeship at Dounreay.
I couldn't live away from the sea,i worked at Derby for a month or two and hated the fact i never saw or heard the sea, coastal scenery just cant be beaten as far as i'm concerned.
