Thank you for some ideas of what it could mean. My son seemed to think it was to do with snakes or crows. He thought he had read somewhere that crows were involved, such as a murder of crows???? So the suggestion of magpies are along the same lines, and as the person who asked me the question is an avide bird watcher this could be right. Does anyone else out there have the full answer please?

A 'Charm' is the collective noun for a group of Goldfinches and 'Murder' is the collective noun for a group of crows.
Therefore you could be 'charmed' and witness a 'murder' whilst birdwatching.
