View Full Version : A little Caithness mystery

I'm sure someone on the board can put me right on this.....

In a biography of Jimmy Gilbert (the famous head of Comedy and Light Entertainment for the BBC in the 70s and 80s who commissioned much classic comedy shows) there is an inference that he came from Wick.

The reason for this was that apparently he would use the phrase "They'll never get that in Wick." when going through a comedy script and finding something too obscure. Indeed the writers of Only Fools & Horses are alleged to have put the line "They'll never get that in Wick." into the script for one episode to play a trick on Jimmy, but it never made it through.

So, my question is, does anyone know if Jimmy Gilbert did have Wick connections, as I've never heard of him mentioned as one of the county's famous sons.

I believe Jimmy's own son is Colin Gilbert who brought us Rab C Nesbit and other such comedy shows to BBC Scotland.

And yes I have googled this....extensively.

Now be serious - would you let on if you were a Weeker ?. I had not heard this one but it might well be correct, lots of clever people from the WK.

I'm fairly sure that Jimmy's wife is the actress Fiona Clyne who came from Noss. Their daughter is the actress Susan Gilmore who appeared in Howard's Way.

I think you might be right there Skifter. Jimmy Gilbert was born in Edinburgh in 1923 and may well have referred to Wick because of his wife's connection.

You're a topper, Skifter ! You've got it bang on - just looked up her details online and that's the link. Thank you very much.

Can I take the opportunity to make a side comment here. This is an example of Caithness.org at its very best - people discussing, learning and exploring things to do with Caithness. So can I make an appeal:

- first of all to all Orgers : raise the game in these forums and bring it back to the standard that it used to be.

- secondly to all the Moderators : uphold the ethos of what this forum is supposed to be about (i.e. Caithness) and weed out the irrelevant & ignorant as well as weeding out the insolent. I waded through 4 pages of General threads this afternoon and found about two threads that had anything remotely to do with what I thought the focus of this forum was.

I'll get off my high horse now before it bolts.

So you want it to be solely about Caithness and nothing else? A rather parochial view in my opinion. Are Caithnessians banned from talking about the wider world? Are non-Caithnessians such as myself barred from having an account on your Brave New Forum?

I take my guidance from the Forum Rules:

"As this is a community forum and is read by visitors of all ages, genders, religions, nationalities etc, please be aware of this when you post. Although we are not going to set a rule for what you choose to discuss on the forums, we would prefer that the topics are related to Caithness in some way, or national issues that affect everyone."

If all of what you disagreed with with were removed from the site then I doubt if the membership would hit three figures.

Quality, not quantity. If you want to chase ratings, then just post porn.

If you didn't like it why come back?

The children seemed to have left the building......and I was really wanting to ask the question I asked in this thread. And got the answer very kindly from an Orger.

So let's all eat our own dog food and leave it at that.

A typical answer to a fair statement (in my humble opinion only). So if we do not agree with the resident trannie its all oot ?? - no wonder only trash is being posted on this forum - we certainly need more like the Oldbyre - or does that opinion not go down well either.

Since the posters of Caithness.org seem unable to resist turning every thread into a trading insults exercise, I close this thread now and thank the few genuine respondents for answer the question I posted.

Like your flippant comment of one word in the thread regarding a Russian speaker that someone sought!!

TheOldByre has hit the nail on the head - More and more posts have nothing to do with Caithness. Surely there are other places where people can ask 'what TV do you watch' or 'crossdressing poll'.
But I suppose this must be what orgers want.

I agree with what the Olde Byre said, but as Cattach commented..why the single word 'net' on the Russian thread. Is it.. do as I say and not as I do!
I for one would like to read bits and pieces about Caithness, but do welcome some hilarity/ comments/ questions etc.......
I did a week or so ago 'profer' my advice on the Pets Forum, as did a few other people, and was told that it was closed to those who wanted to ooooooooo & ahhhhhhhhhh about pets/ and some rather unkind things were being said. The Mods will soon sort out the idiots so why all the unnecessary comments.
The reason I said anything, was that Fundraising for these 'things' can be fraught with danger. If someone wants to contribute go ahead. One doesn't need a National audience to do so. I have had personal knowledge of these things, and just wanted to give people a 'Heads Up'. I think one person was banned for disruptive behaviour but surely we can all have our opinion and act like adults.........
Even altho there are some 'different' people on here, it is a public forum and the Mods do a good job.
In my humble opinion anyway, and I enjoyed the Sun nite quiz.....Interesting and lots of fun comments.

Just thought I would retract my 'do as I say and not as I do'. pointing the the Byre man! I am sure the contributer meant 'Neit' as is Russian 'No'...and that is just fun I am sure.....refreshing to have some intellect around on occasion!
No sarcasm/ we all learned something, and that's what we are here for..........
The word Byre brings back many memories..like the 'Mucking of Geordies Byre' and the days spent doing same as a young boy....
And working on the Croft days......a friend broke his leg, so on went the plastic baggie, but after spreading the dung the bag had burst/ anyway we went to the dance in the Assembly rooms in Wick, and he wondered why no one would dance with him. Pretty strong smell after a day of spreading dung! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh those were the days!
Half bottle, packet o five fags and enough money to get into the dance....on the way ....was it Peachies Fish and Chips?, and then after the dance to the Cliff Bakery in the early morning,,,,and then going home trying to avoid the Bobbies!........Not politically correct of course but there again this was a 'few' years ago!

I agree with the sentiments expressed by the OldByre.
Can we have a moratorium on threads based on the latest front page of the Daily Mail?

Can we have a moratorium on tedious people who attempt to be the "tail" that wags the org?
