I know there is a birdwatching subforum, however only a few ever post photos in there, so I thought a bird photo thread would be good in here too, so hopefully all the other photographers on here can post any bird photos they have. Also I can try to learn some tips as birds are the reason I got my camera.

Here are 2 from the Thurso boating pond yesterday. A Mute swan and a Mallard duck.

No mystery here in North America. It is the common American Robin:

The north Sutherland ranger mentioned that if you see a cormorant up here it's almost certainly a shag.

Kenn
11-Feb-09, 10:58
Thank you kas, was the colour that made me ask the question.
What's the easiest way to tell cormorants and shags appart ? I know the adults have slightly different plumage colour and I think the shag is slightly smaller but may be wrong on that.
The only way I recognise a cormorant is by the typical outspread wing pose and also think they tend to be solitary whilst shags congregate in large groups.

Great photos guys.
I went to Thurso Boating pond last week to try out the manual settings for the very first time, 10 mins in my zoom lens went haywire. So its away to see what is wrong with it!! Disaster as I am lost without it and just when I came away from automatic settings.

Kara,

You have your viewing permissions incorrectly set on flickr, not allowed to view!

You need to format the link so the photograph appears on the org.

1. Go to the photographs page on flickr.
2. Click on "All Sizes" icon above the photo.
3. Select Size you wish to post using the options after "Available Sizes".
4. Scroll down to below the photograph to Box 2, "Grab the photo's URL:"
5. Copy the URL in the box
6. Inside the message box on the Org, click on the Postcard Icon above the message box, paste the URL from box 2 on flickr in pop up box that appeares.
7. I then choose to put the photographs page URL underneath.

Hope this helps

Kara, I've found it best to just keep images border free. You end up getting far too many comments on whether people like or dislike the frame and the image gets ignored. (and your first 3D border treatment was terrible!)

Also, unless the text actually has a purpose (like a photo title, company name or weblink) it also tends to be fairly pointless and get negative comments.

Just me pennies worth.
