Spotted this lurking in the grass along by Thurso Castle , looks like the muzzle of a canon to me, can any one confirm this?

Most probably inorg as two (might have been three) canons sat between two turrets infront of the castle - this is a pic of what is left of one as most of this bit has been eaten away by the sea.

The cannons themselves used to sit out the front of the castle did they not, I am sure I remember them about twenty years back, and if I remember correctly they were left to wreck and ruin, exposed to the wrath of the sea. I wonder if any were ever kept? Something like that would have been great in the New Horizons Centre.

This thread made me look through the Old Thursa Piccys thread at photos of the Castle in its former glory, what a beauty it was.

Post 7 on the thread below, just in case anyone has never seen the photos.

I think OH's mum might have a picture of the cannons in their original positions - I know she's got a cannonball stashed away somewhere that she found on the beach! I'll ask her next time I'm over there.

I don't know what happened to the canons but I do know what's going to happen to the castle if something isn't done very soon to stop the erosion from the sea! As you can see from this photo, the erosion is now so bad it's almost at the foundations below the tower, all that's left is the footpath. Another couple of bad storms and the tower will end up in the sea, where's Historic Scotland, shouldn't they be making sure this iconic castle is preserved for posterity.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the cannons at Thurso East were originally at the Battery at Castletown. There were 2 of them I think.

Yes I seem to remember they were badged George lll Birmingham proof or something like that, I have some photo's of them somewhere if I can find them.

I remember seeing at least one of them hanging over the edge of what used to be the gun placement and into the sea.
