John Murray abt 1817 - 1855

Hi everyone,

I have come to a complete halt while researching an ancestor from the Caithness area & I wonder if anyone may have any information.

John Murray was born about 1817 probably in Caithness. He died before 1855, possibly as early as 1850 or 1851 as I can't locate him with the family on the 1851 census at Greenvale.

He married Elizabeth Ryrie Ronaldson (Ranaldson) on 21 Oct 1843 in Dunnet, Caithness. Both were living at Greenvale at time of marriage. The witnesses were Thomas Murray & Donald Gunn.

Elizabeth was the daughter of James Ranaldson of Dunnet, Caithness & Christiana Cormack from Walls, Orkney.

The only other information I have is that John had a brother Thomas Murray. Thomas was still living in 1876, probably in Caithness.

John Murray & Elizabeth Ronaldson had 3 children that I know of:

Margaret Murray 1846 - 1876
John Murray 1848 -
Elizabeth Murray 1850 - 1938

I don't know if this is of any use, but I have a Thomas Murray in my family, born 13/08/1802 to parents David Murray and Christian Gordon, in Clavie, Reay, Caithness. He married a Barbara MacKay in Thurso 20/11/1840.
I did a quick check on Scotland's People and there was a birth of a John Murray 31/07/1814,in Latheron, but no record of a mother (which is quite common). There are however 12 John Murray births in the Caithness area from 1813-1820.
Thomas Murray can be foun in Portskerra in 1841 census but moves to Elgin on 1851, 1861 censuses. He may be the brother you are looking for but I cannot say for certain.:lol:

Could your John Murray was maybe son of John Murray & Margaret Bruce m 1803 Canisbay.
He had known siblings b Dunnet: Thomas 1814 Margaret 1822 Jean 1820and Diana 1825 .

CAN'T FIND A BIRTH FOR JOHN although 1841 census shows him.

IS THIS SAME FAMILY??? or am I on wrong track. If it is then Thomas in 1851 was married and had his family and his mother Margaret and sister Diana.

However I also have a death for a John Murray 1858 in Greenland Dunnet b 1806 app Married but wife not named. But gives his parents as John Murray and Helen Alexander?????? Informant nehpew James Murray. I think this John was b c 1806 in Olrig where John Murray/Helen Alexander were and he married a Janet - 1851 in census Dunnet with his family in Greenland.
