View Full Version : Portland Arms Hotel, Lybster
I'm wondering if there is an archives or historical society in Lybster that would happen to have some old photos of the Portland Arms Hotel that is located there. I've got pictures of the hotel as it is now, but I'd like some of it in its early days. I'm also hoping that they might have a photo of Catharine Mowat (maiden name Barnie, later became Catharine Coghill after her first husband died) and James Mowat (died in 1886 in Lybster) who owned the hotel for many years. Thanks to Oddquine, I know that Catharine (born in 1847 in Canisbay) died in 1946 . . . after living all that time, I'm hoping someone, somewhere snapped a photo of her or her family! Thanks for your help!

Hi Lauren
I would suggest The Book of Lybster by Donald Young, it's an amazing account of Lybster's story. I imagine it's difficult to get a copy outside Caithness, though, and I'm sorry I can't scan you some of mine. Good luck!
Thanks for the tip, Kimberley! I've made a note of the book you suggested and I'll see if I can track it down.

Thank you all so very much for helping me locate some photos of the old hotel. It was like Christmas in my 'inbox' when I checked this morning!
