Great work MPH. Best I've seen in a while.

I'd fix the barb fence on the left where the OOF grass goes in front of the wire. (or a left side crop).

What lense did you use?

Both birds were shot through a rather full of salt spray window, but I am still pleased how they turned out as this is sooo NOT what I would normally shoot :-)

Cheers Deemac,i must be getting better or lucky.
The oof grass is a branch and i thought i had missed it but i was balancing on the edge of a ditch to try and avoid it and couldn't get any further over.

The lens was a Canon 75-300USM at 300m

If i did a left side crop would that not make it look lop sided or should i crop some of the right as well?
Tell you what..download it and alter it as you see fit if you want.Post the result,i'm keen to learn.
Cheers to everyone else for your kind comments.

Something along these lines.

Just my interpretation. Your original image is very good anyway, just a wee bit too central for my taste.

Thanks Deemac - I try for symmetry (I admit to bein a bit ocd on that subject ) and have to agree yours is way better! Interesting lesson learnt!

"Rule of thirds" is one of the main compositional lessons to bear in mind with many photographic images.

Just divide the horizontal and vertical into 3 parts and try and place all your main image components where these invisible lines cross. It just seems to look more pleasing to the viewers eye.

Symmetry of course also has its place in some compositions. (particularly architectural based images).

Hmmm - when I crop pics I try not to saw off bits of anything interesing in the pic and then weigh up whether it looks lop-sided or not. :confused TY tho Deemac - always like gettin tips on here! :)

So - why didn't you apply this to the image?????

Too much time reading magazines .. That's missed the ENTIRE point of rule of thirds. And I can't (well I can actually) believe you wasted time drawing a grid on this image to prove that you got it wrong.

Mmmm, I've pondered over whether to actually reply to this thread or not!! (anyway for what its worth - here goes).

John, I'm getting a fairly aggressive, negative vibe from your comments and not very clear why. I respect your photographic knowledge and talent but don't really see why you have to be to so publically destructive towards me!! This is far more the sort of issue that unfortunately abounds in the "Music" section on the forum. (too many children).

I was only airing my own interpretation on a fairly standard, known composition idea.

Quite how you should know how many magazine I do or do not read, or what the purpose of this type of comment is, baffles me.

You are also fully aware that I am a professional graphic designer by trade so drawing a grid such as this takes me literally about 4 seconds (when you have professional drawing tools and know how to use them). Again, what is the purpose of this comment? (I was actually quite surprised after overlaying the grid just how well my crop edit fitted to the 3 x 3 grid!!)

I'm sure it would have been far more constructive to have just shown your own edit on this fine image and enlighten us all.
