BAD weather has delayed the scheduled start of improvement work to the Thurso town centre streetscape.

The Highland Council had intended the scheme to start last week but it is now due to get under way on Monday, November 10.

It will concentrate initially on the town hall square/High Street area and will include the creation of new car-parking spaces on waste ground off Market Street.

The first phase is due to take four to five weeks.

The second phase, which will centre on improvements to the town's pedestrian precinct, is expected to get under way in March.

Concern about the schedule surfaced at the latest meeting of the town's community council.

Thurso Town Improvements Association representative Sandy Macleod asked Highland Council officials to ensure the work does not clash with the annual pre-Christmas shoppers' fun day being held on Saturday, December 6.

Meanwhile, the community council will also press for improvements to the public footpath leading from Janet Street to the boating pond.

Members are unhappy that previous representations to repair damaged netting wire at the access created for disabled people have not led to action.

In addition, they believe the path is not being swept enough by the Highland Council.

"It's an adopted footpath and is a really good amenity but every time I go there there's an accumulation of rubbish, leaves and debris," said community council chairman Bob Earnshaw.

"It doesn't seem to getting swept enough – it would look better and it would also improve safety."

Community councillors heard that moves are afoot to repair the flight of steps below the town's cemetery at the riverside.

The scheme has been drawn up and approved by local councillors and a bid has been submitted to secure funding.
