Warnings have been posted on a Dog Rescue Forum concerning the substance Xylitol. This can be found in Sugar free chewing gum and Plaque remover for dogs teeth.
Two dog owners posted accounts of their dogs accidentally consuming this substance with almost deadly consequences.
In one incident a dog found a pack of sugar free chewing gum and within minutes showed symptoms of distress. Fortunately the owner discovered that the dog had eaten some of the gum and rushed the dog to the vets. Fortunately the Vet was aware of recent similar cases and immediately began researching details on The Internet whilst the dog was en route. The dog survived but only after Intensive Care treatment and the owner was told it was fortunate she realised what their dog had eaten .
The second case concerned someone visiting a member of her family . Whilst there the dog drank some water from the bowl of the family's puppy . The water contained a plaque remover ( Some owners use this product to keep their dogs teeth clean - not necessary if you give the dogs hide bones and / or clean the dogs teeth )
The dog subsequently became seriously ill and was very fortunate to survive . Once again it was because the owner was observant and eventually realised what had happened and the Vet knew the dog needed immediate and specialist medical assistance
This is apparently ( according to manufacturers ) a very rare reaction . Nevertheless two owners have now posted warnings of their experience and it would seem to be a sensible precaution to be very aware of the possibility of serious reactions to this substance. Other dogs have apparently not been so lucky.
Please be aware !
