For our Lothian-based Caithness bands... :)

IN years gone by it hosted the likes of New Order, The Smiths, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Orange Juice, Queen and AC/DC – and now you or your band have the chance to play a stage that’s been trodden by the greats.

After the success of our inaugural Battle of the Bands competition – which saw The Douglas Kay Band win a highprofile support slot with Last Gang at Cabaret Voltaire this week – The Guide is delighted to announce our next online competition, from which four winners go on to compete in a showcase final at the newlyopened 1500-capacity Picture House.

Celebrating the depth of musical talent to be found on Edinburgh’s live music circuit, The Guide’s Battle of the Bands competition will be open to all unsigned bands and singersongwriters currently based in the Capital.

After an online vote at www.edinburghnews.com two bands will make it through to the showcase final at the Picture House on Saturday, December 6, while another two bands will be chosen by our judging panel.

To judge the final, each act will be viewed by a panel of music industry experts, who we’ll be announcing in next week’s edition of The Guide.
The winner on the night will be the act with the highest score from the combined judges, with a runner-up also being announced.

Evening News arts and entertainment editor Liam Rudden says: “The Capital has produced a wealth of talented musicians over the years, and it only takes a visit to one of the many live music venues in the city to see that the local scene is in rude health right now.
“After the success of the inaugural Battle of the Bands competition, we are delighted to introduce this next instalment, which we hope will not only raise the profile of local performers but also unearth one of two gems.”

The competition was also hailed by John Stout, general manager of the Picture House, as an exciting platform for promoting local talent.
He said: “We are delighted to be involved in The Guide’s Battle of the Bands competition. Support from local venues and the local media is hugely important for the nurturing of local talent, of which this city has an abundance.
“The grand final at The Picture House is sure to be a great night for fans of live music, while for the bands themselves, the chance to play on the same stage as the likes of Travis, Idlewild and The Charlatans is sure to be a thrill,” he added.

To be eligible to take part in the Guide’s Battle of the Bands competition, entrants must be Lothian based and must be available to take part in the showcase final being held at the Picture House on Saturday, December 6.

Any act wishing to enter should e-mail their best song – in either Windows Media or MP3 format -to theguide@edinburghnews.com ASAP, along with a colour picture.
We’ll then put the songs online at www.edinburghnews.com where readers can vote for their favourite from Friday, 24 October.
Entries can be sent now, so be quick to email a track to theguide@edinburghnews.com
