I am just sending out a general call for anyone that has information on budges in scotland. I'd like to get in contact and then I can ask specific questions.

Seriously, I guess I had that coming. I'll be a bit more specific.

I have two questions.

First: I have been able to trace my Budge line back to a John Budge, born Abt 1677 in Houstrydun, Caithness, Scotland, married to Isobell (?). Is this person familiar to anyone? Any more info?

Second: What is the best way to research my scottish ancestors in or before the 1600's?

You could try clicking on "Search" above then on "Advanced" and searching through this message board, this subject has come up before.

I doubt you'll get any further back than you have in a direct line, the old church records were mostly destroyed.

If you want to know more about the origins and history of the Budge family in Caithness then I've put some pages from a book at:

They are graphics files so may take some time to download if you are dialup.

Hi David
My direct ancestor line of Budge are back to William Budge b 1735 and Charlotte BAIN married 1759 Wick .

I have gathered quite a bit on Budge from Caithness and records earlier than 1735 - just haven't as yet link my William further back.
Have data Nearly all 1652 - 1855 BM all Scotland and Marriages Wick only 1855 - 1927 and some others.
What is your line from John b 1677 ? do you follow down.

I have Isobel(l) or Isabella Budge b abt 1810 m George Ronaldson in Dunnet in 1827. They were my gg grandparents and I have data on some of their descendants if this fits in with your Budges.

I can find 2 Isobel b Dunnet - loks like 1st one died - could this fit yours.

ISOBEL OC 5 JUL 1801 Dunnet Caithness JAMES BUDGE/ISOBEL SWANSON
ISOBEL OC 19 JUN 1803 Dunnet Caithness JAMES BUDGE/ISOBEL SWANSON

These are 2 different families. The Isobel christened on 5 Jul belongs to my family. They had a daughter Margaret on 27 May 1803.

The second JB and IS lived in Wester in Dunnet but my family lived at Lochend of Dunnet.

I had noted - ALL CHRISTENING DATES not Birth dates to James Budge and Isabella Swanson.

Yes these are all christening dates. Eliza, Isobel ( 5 Jul), James and Margt are all my family. When I was transcribing the OPR for Dunnet, I found no more children for JA and IS no 2. I wonder if the parish scribe had made a mistake with the names. Also both entries were on the same page and just seperated by one birth. Most peculiar. James married Margaret Robeson and was my GGgrandfather. He farmed at Inkstack in Dunnet until 1843. In 1855 he moved to Bigton Farm in Shetland where I was born and my brother is still the farmer there today.

Have you any further details on the Robeson family.
I am looking for family of Helen Robson (Robertson in later certs). Born c 1772- 78. Going by naming pattern of her Children to James More her parents could be Donald and Elizabeth.!

I can only find one Helen Robson born in Dunnet - 8/4/1798 to John Robson and Christian Broachie.

L have a jennet/jannet budge who married alexander cormack on the 17th nov 1750 they are my greatx4 grandparents not yet gone back on the budge family if you any infomation i would like it

(very worn) Alex Cormack fr Keiss 10.1801 80, w Janet Budge 8.1798 69, ed s John tacksman Aucorn feuar Keiss; replaced Wm Cormack, Keiss imo fa John, Keiss 4.1847 94, mo Helen Reid 4.1848 89.

I have followed descendants of 2 of their children John m Helen Reid and Christina m Donald Budge. Where do you fit in.

1. b 1801 Isabella as you said in your family. died 1 Feb 1865 aged 63 in Corsback. Wife of Donald Swanson. m 1846. Hope I got correct one.
2. b 1803 Isabella m George Ronaldson - documented at Brough in various census until death 15 Dec 1878.
both say parents were James Budge (farmer) and Isabella Swanson as per the registration of baptisms.

I believe however that the Isabella b 1803 should read daughter of James Budge and Margaret Calder who were at WESTER for other childrens births

Tricia, (and other Budge researchers), I don't know if you have looked at my Miller will threads, but in 1833 there is a James BUDGE listed in Thurso, occupation Cooper.

Christian Mackay was a sister of John Mackay who married Elizabeth Budge sister of Isobel Budge ! Their daughter Margaret married James Sutherland, son of Katherine Budge and David Sutherland. Katherine's parents James Budge and Violet Manson were Elizabeth Budge's grandparents.

Re the Isobel who married Geo Ronaldson, on her death certificate her parents are given as James Budge and Isobel Swanson as per the baptism register. I continue to ponder on this dilemma !
