I use TMPGEnc DVD Author for converting videos to DVD format. It's not free though (but is excellent).

You could burn the AVI / MPG files onto the DVD and some DVD players will recognise that and play it. However that's not a DVD format that all DVD players will play.

For converting to a normal DVD hopefully be able to suggest something free which would probably be a better bet for the odd video. Google turns up these (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-GB%3Aofficial&hs=srp&q=convert+avi+mpg+to+dvd+free&btnG=Search&meta=) but a recommendation might be a better idea!

You could use Windows Movie Maker. It is a basic video editing tool and will allow you to create a DVD for the TV. It comes free with Microsoft. :)

Hi Dorrie,

Are you sure that Windows Movie Maker allows you to create DVD's?

It's been a few years since I last used it, but it could only be used for saving your videos to CD for play in DVD players that recognise the format (I just checked, it's called HighMAT).

When I checked just now I couldn't see a way of saving the files to DVD - where is it?

Ah, you could be right. I actually use Premier Elements 3 so haven't done it in Windows Movie Maker. Sorry if I was wrong. :)

You got my hopes up there! :D

I thought I spent money on software that I could have got for free! Not too worry.

I'm sure there is free software out there to do it. I did look for it in the past but what I found wasn't reliable (would crash out before finishing) or was too complicated for it's own good. Things will have changed though as it was quite some time ago.

Hi Kodiak,

That will only burn the data once it's been converted to DVD format.

I used to use Burn4Free but I seemed to get more coasters than CD's. I switched over to CDBurnerXP (http://cdburnerxp.se/) and it works a lot better (and is also free). It's one more (in a growing list) of free burners!
