Today there was this massive cruise ship, "The Royal Princes" docked in Scrabster. A nice photo opportunity on such a nice and calm day.
Here are some variations on the theme...

Personally I found the little ships in the harbour a lot more photogenic... more of that later.

Interesting how she completely dwarfs the harbour.

I must admit that I have been sitting in the Hotel covering reception this morning looking at the sunshine outside with a mixture of envy and frustration!

Nownow North Light... your turn will come :-)) breathe in - breathe out - breathe in....

For me today this was a much more appealing shot than the big neighbour...

That's true, North Light, and the lighthouse looks miniscule in comparison to the ship! :eek:

I love your panorama of Scrabster harbour, Raven, and the way everything is reflected! :cool:

Didn't escape out till late afternoon, by which time the sun had long since departed, but was not only lucky enough to have the chance to wash the camera in the rain but also to photograph the Royal Princess leaving harbour.

What a monster in the harbour! Like the one with the little boat from North Light. When I remember rightly a shot with a hughe and a small boat has won the last years Highland Challenge :-)

Tugmistress, they were not really the best conditions to take photographs in were they.
Kevin, If I remember correctly boats are normally referred to as female.

this is why lol

WHY IS A SHIP CALLED "SHE"?

A ship is called "she" because,

There is always a great deal of bustle around her;

There is usually a gang of men around her;

She has a waist and stays;

Her rigging cost's more than her hull;

It takes a lot of paint to keep her looking good;

It is not the initial expense that breaks you,

It’s the upkeep;

She can be all decked out;

It takes an experienced man to handle her correctly;

And without a man at the helm,

She is absolutely uncontrollable;

She has her topsides, hides her bottom and,

When coming into port,

She always heads for the buoys.

I am enjoying everyone's super photos on this thread! Well done, folks! :)

Is this the largest cruise ship to dock at Scrabster, so far?

New driver, I like your photo of the Royal Princess and Havnavoe together. And Dunnet Head is showing up so beautifully in the sunlight! :cool:

Great photo thread! Say, so its possible to take a cruise and have a stop over in Scrabster? I think that sounds great to this Yank. Anyone know more about that?

Hi Bruce,
possibly do a search on the 'Hebridean Princess', she is thecruise ship that visits most often, been 4 or 5 times this year. Another good search maybe 'Scottish Highlands Cruise'. The Royal Princess (this big one) is part of 'Princess Cruises' or something like that, it may be worth a search on their website if they are doing one next year, this boat was last in here in 2004 (i think) under the name 'Minerva II.
That's all i can think of to help you at the moment.
And in answer to a question about biggest boat, yes at over 44,000T this is the biggest boat to have ever berthed at Scrabster :)

Where is everybody? No-one is on deck, no-one is on the pier, no-one is milling about on the street waiting for a table in the Upper Deck! Does the boat just come in for supplies and then go somewhere else to get the passengers?

Trust there were loads of passengers, the coach trips from the boat went all over! there must have been at least 8 coaches and a lot of people walked into town too.
there was a pipe band playing at the end of the pier when they left but it was raining so not many people on deck to appreciate it sad to say.
