Norton 360 problem

According to my Norton 360 software, my PC 'needs to be scanned for viruses and spyware'. However, when I try to run a scan, it stops after about 2 minutes, and so the problem is not fixed. This then leads my complete system to freeze -I am not able to shut down my PC safely.

I have a Compaq laptop, with Windows Vista, and Internet Explorer 7.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you watch the scan, does it stop at the same file every time? If so, what is the file?

Also check the Norton 360 logs to see if they say anything.
