avg is fine for ya Lynne or if ya wanna pay then NOD32 is my choice.

There isnt really "one" almighty super dooper program out there as they all have there pro's and cons but if yer a sensible netter then AVG is all ya need.

Everybody has their favourites. I check out av-test.org and see the ones that are the best at detection and take it from there to see which ones I liked.

I second Octane's recommendation of NOD32 - that's the I use and have done for the last 3 years. It's never let me down.

After years and years of happy use of AVG Free Edition, I've recently fallen out with AVG 8.0 and uninstalled it. It just became too bloated and annoying.

A pity, as GriSoft have done what they do so well, but the Link Scanner issues along with the utterly stupid excuses for it finally made me just bin it.

As an alternative, having recently been happily surprised with Comodo's free firewall application, I have installed Comodo's brand new free AV software.

And you know what? It does the job, it updates when I want it to and it doesn't hog resources (well, no more than AVG did).

Must be noted that after a few weeks using Comodo AV I was noticing some 'issues' with safely disconnecting a USB device. It seems that Comodo AV was causing this (it's a known issue and unlikely to be fixed before the beta stage ends) so again, it too has fallen by the wayside.

Using Avast now, and it seems very good. It even scans your hard-drive whenever the screensaver is in operation. :)
