Tugmistress,

Thank you for the comments, was speaking to a very nice gentleman and was told all sorts of history of the place, he is a mountain of information, found out i need to go back again on a day off to get time to walk to some more interesting places just round from the steps :)

If it wasn't for Ian Sutherland and a couple of helpers, whaligoe wouldn't be what it is as he and helpers go out faithfully repairing damage done by weather,(frost rain etc) and also
vandals who take delight in removing steps and pushing them over the side of cliff where
it is sometimes impossible to recover them from , so Ian and others go and get stone from nearby and replace what they can so people can go up and down and take the nice pictures shown previously

The thing that gives me terrible vertigo is - funny enough - standing at the bottom of Whaligoe steps and looking up at the cliff face... Is that normal?
:D
