Oh for a quiet summer’s day
Away from all the strimmers
Where I can sit for a while in peace
In the shade o’ a tree that glimmers
Wi’ blossom o’ pink and leaves o’ green
And a honey bee buzzing nearby
As I sip my drink and read my book
Then gaze up to the sky.

But at number twenty-eight it seems
The hedge just has to be trimmed
By Mr MacDougal in an old tweed cap
And glasses once horn-rimmed.

Number twenty just over the road
He’s fashioned on Percy Thrower,
Has noticed the height of his perfect grass
And sets off for his mower.

Up and down in a noisey way
With stripes going this way and that
Oh please will it end soon , then a bit of luck
He stops now for a chat
With Mrs MacKay ( a glint in his eye)
As he hands her a potted geranium
She gently touches the petals of pink
‘Is this no a Pelargonium?’

He nods then and takes her hand
She gives him a knowing smile
Both now inside, I pick up my book –
I think they’ll be gone for a while !
