I found the following in the Thurso OPR for Wm Horne and Eliz Houston
16 November 1833 - John
1 April 1836 - David
25 July 1838 - Helen
There were no witnesses to the baptisms and William was a fisher when John was born and then a labourer in 1836 and 1838. Alexander may have been born in another parish - I had a look in Olrig and DUnnet but nothing there.

The family is in Thurso in the 1841 census at Cowgate - you can find them on FREECEN - ED4 page 18

Hi Rosemary
Thanks for getting back to me. The Alexander Horne I have was born on 19.03.1824 in Duncansby and registered in Cansiby to William Horne b 1801 and Elizabeth Houston b 19.07.1802 and married in Duncansby in 1822. I am trying to work out if it is Alexander whomoved to Kilsyth/New Monkland area before 1849.
Many thanks
Roseann
He is not in Caithness from 1851 onwards.
Mamie
Thanks Marnie
How do you know this? - I think I am on the right track but need to do some further research.
Much appreaciated
Roseann
looked at all the censuses lol.
Mamie
Thank you for this, Marnie. Was he in Caithness in 1841? - I have tried an online search which came back with nothing. Is there any evidence that his parents William and Elizabeth remained in Caithness?
Do you have a Horne interest?
Many thanks
Roseann
No specific interest in Horne's unless they were from Duncansbay lol.
My grandfather was born there in 1886.
There is a William and Elizabeth in Glasgow in 1861 retired seaman born c 1802
there is a William but no Elizabeth born c 1791 in Wick
Mamie
I've just noticed this on one of my Death certs.
Catherine Margaret Horne, Single 6 West Banks Tce, Wick.
died 13 June 1928 age 65yrs
her parents John Horne, Merchant, Elizabeth ms Kirk dec'd
Witness George Gould bro in law of Binn Toll House, Huntly
From my records I see my grannie lived a few doors away from Catherin M Horne..... small world.
Is Catherine one of yours ?
Dear Mamie and Trinkie
Thanks for getting back to me. The furtherest back I can go is to a William Horne born in 1801 ("begotten in fornication") to a William Horne, soldier in the Caithness Highlanders and Fairly Campbell born in 1788. Her parents were John Campbell and Catherine McKay and she married John McLaren in 1821.
William Horne b 1801 and Elizabeth Houston b 19.07.1802 (parents John Houston and Barbara McBeth) married in Duncansby in 1822 and Alexander was born in 1824 in Duncansby and registered in Canisby.
The next connection I make is Alexander Horne marrying Margaret Ralston in 1849 in Kilsyth, Stirlingshire. On his son's marriage certificate of 1877 he is deceased and having been a weaver. Between 1849 and 1877 I can find no trace of him although from looking at thr censuses there was a great deal of movement of people at this time working in the coal mines, ironworks, spinning mills and railways.I should be able to find in but he has eluded me thus far. I can trace one of his son's and his descendents up to the present day. Catherine would not appear to be one of mine as it is not a name that comes up in my searches - John, William, Alexander, James do.
Thankyou for all of your help so far and I will carry on hopefully that it will all fall into place.
Best wishes Roseann

Fairly is not a common name and mostly from small number in Durness area of Sutherland, I believe.

I think the guy who has the shop and post office at Melvich is James Horne.
I have Elizabeth Horne b.1843 Wick marrying into my family tree parents Ralph Horne & Elizabeth MacDonald. No further details.
Caroline
