Hi

Just wondering if someone can solve something I have been puzzling over for a while...apologies if its a daft query or something that has been discussed ages ago lol

At Thurso beach there is a cave (the cave is actually on the beach going over towards the Rockwell) and in the cave there is alot of writing on it. Looks like perhaps a stonemason has practised on the rock wall?? Is this right or does anyone know the story behind it or who did it??

That'll be the Salvation Army cave, with the crest of the said organisation carved into the cave wall.

I heard, years ago, that an old lady ghost, who was suspected to be a witch who was executed, can be seen in the cave sometimes.
That always put me off when I was young but now I am middle-aged I am going to visit it.
Where exactly is it?:confused

Its down on the beach towards the caravan park end. Just before the Rockwell as someone else has said there looks as if there are two entrances into it but one of them has got blocked off. And yeah I remember running round it when I was a kid as well!! lol

Would love to know more about the ghost story as I have been told I have at least a couple of suspected witchy ancestors!

Might nip and have a look and get some pics later today when out with the dog.

From what I can vaguely remember it was about a woman who was spurned by a fisherman so she put a curse on him and the next time he went to sea he was blown overboard. His body was found some time later at the neck of the cave and was also where the locals burnt her. I think it was around 1750 and her nickname was Black Sunset. An ancestor???

Our pal Robin (darkiedreamtilt) has been kind enough to post some of his photos of the cave, both inside and out. They are in posts 24 to 28 here (http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://forum.caithness.org/showthread.php?t=46341&page=2). I hope you will be sharing yours with us too, SunsetSong! :)

Have tried over the last week to get some pics but timed it wrong to begin with and would have been wading through the sea!! lol But now with the weather having been so wet there is water pouring down the cave wall which is making the writings very unclear. Will try again once the weather has cleared up a bit. Must say from the pics I have seen the wall has deteriorated a lot since then and most of it is illegible....though then again that could be because of the rain.
