Do let me know of other insulting terms swapped between our rival towns. In thurso, for example, people from Wick are routinely referred to as "dirty Weekers".But, as Wickers will tell you , the adjective is a corruption of an old dialect word meaning thrifty.

Naming Dirty Weekers is similar to that old chestnut "How many famous Belgians can you name?"
Most notorious present day Dirty Weeker - Graeme Smith who has cost Caithnesians everything.
Surely local people deserve their opinions to be carried out by the so-called leaders of our community.[evil]
Thought this would raise a few hackles!!

I was told that "Dirdy" meant hard working.
have heard it said that this term was in no way meant to be derogatary
but was a reference to hard working classes of the times
especially in the times of the herring halcyon days
not many news reporters would know much about it [lol] tony
