Where would we be able to recycle our plastic bottles as in empty milk cartons and diluting juice bottles ?
Can we do it up here ?

This topic has been discussed a few times on here but unfortunately the nearest plastic recycling point is in Tain. Highland council seem to be of the opinion that it isn't cost effective.

Hi, I did a project on this very subject not very long ago and as always its a money issue. I asked the Orgers if they wanted such a thing and it was a resounding yes but the council wont take it further.

I am lucky my mother lives near Tain so we just collect them until she visits or we head down. I think its terrible that plastic in Caithness goes to Landfill but plastic further south is collected.

I have one suggestion, the college do collect plastic in a limited way so you could ask there. Good luck!

surely with the increasing cost of oil it will become a good money-making activity for the council.......

When in Holland a few years ago at Dunreill. We used to watch all the kids going through the rubbish skips taking any plastic or glass bottles including milk containers. We couldn't understand what on earth they were doing with them untill we visited the shop. These kids were mega rich. They were getting money for returning all the "empties"
Our own grand children soon realised that they good make a good few bob by doing the same.
My husband took back the glass beer bottles in a crate and he was greatly rewarded too.
Maybe the U.K. should take a lesson from the Dutch.

Hi

GREAN in Golspie collect all types of plastic bottles they are behind the Bank of Scotland on the Main Street.

They also take just about any recyclable material see here for more details

That Grean sounds damn good.
lets all write to our local council and ask them to provide a service to get our plastic picked up and recycled!
Better still how about starting a petition to get them to take note.

Who is behind me on that one and are there any legal requirements to starting a petition to the highland council ?

For once the Highland Council may be ahead of you. At the meeting on 10th April the TEC services committee agreed to the provision of recycling facilities for plastic bottles in the main recycling centres at Wick, Thurso, Alness, Inverness, Granish, Nairn, Fort William, Dingwall and Tain;

Other extensions to recycling in Highland can be found in the paper agreed at the meeting. See http://www.highland.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/9C9284A6-E60A-499D-B5FB-9FCCAAF7C385/0/Item6TEC2108.pdf

I knew this has been coming for some time and we have been saving up our plastic bottles in our garage to put them to the new facility in wick rather than dumping them. I do not yet have the dates but hopefully it will not take too long for the new facilities to be brought in. Initially the facilities are on trial to find out if they have longer-term potential. I think the main problem with plastic bottles is the very light weight they represent at landfill. tha is not to say it is not good thing to divert them from landfill. At least we will gain a lot of information from these pilot schemes and divert hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles to other uses.

Thats great news Bill. I think I'm going to look into some recycling bins. I'm already taking cans, glass, paper, and cardboard to the recycle centre - the latter being the most bulky, but plastic bottles will add to that bulk. Anyone recommend a good value range with different sizes & colours, preferably lidded for outdoor weatherproof storage?

EDIT: Stackable is good, with some method of accessing each while stacked (i.e. not having to de-stack them to add new items). Plastic material ideal for lightness.

We take all ours to Thurso College where they are collected and sent south for processing.

Absolutely delighted with this news. The bulk of my bin is the 6 pints plastic milk bottles of which we use at least one a day. I have waited for the facility for a long time. Well done, let's hope the trial works in our favour.
