These were taken on Saturday past - 29/03/2008. The location was Girnigoe Castle near Wick, Caithness. Back to the 350D (didn't borrow work's 40D) with mainly sigma lens (10-20mm), some with a Canon 17-85mm IS USM. As usual as soon as I get out and about the weather goes flat and dull!! Sky replacements & PS all round with a deliberate surreal feel sought. Still experimenting with the ND filters for those long exposures. C&C most welcome.

Great work Deemac! First one has to be my favourite, simply because of the colour of the rocks in the water :-)
I am not too sure about the reflection in the water... The other two are super too, as usual :-)
You should try your 10-20mm on a full format cam, that would really rock!

I feel that first image is so far away from normal perspective that nothing else hits me but a feeling of dizziness; even though the shot is fairly well composed, (I would have lost the foreground completely and included the lobbed off section to the right, perhaps combining two images or more taken in vertical mode).

Did you take any at the 20mm end? It is only a personal problem I have with extreme wide angle for this kind of work, I know plenty folk dig them, (even though the angle is not that extreme given the crop ratio).

Does the 350D allow a faster iso, 25 perhaps? That would give you the longer exposure without stopping down so far, limiting any softening of the image.

Having set up your tripod in front of such a beautiful subject, it may be worth taking a number of different shots at different lengths, and you could have got a couple hand held nearer the cliff edge, effectively taking the foreground out and gaining more of the shore, although of course you would have lost your long exposure effect on the sea.

Do you have the image without the added sky for comparison?

Castle pic is great.

If you added a sky on the castle pic, it was far more effectively integrated.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I was aware of shot 1's limitations (but it got the best reactions on the more specialist Canon forums!!) Here's a few more B-List shots (I took about 75 images in that location) No more sky replacements here . . . .

How accesible are these places...ie. how far from where you can park a car up?

Its probably about a 15 / 20 minute walk from the Lighthouse carpark

I almost agree...but it's horses for courses I think.
The first three had a surreal/fantasy look about them...which is fine.
THey are all well worth looking at - you some have dramatic subject matter on your doorsteps up there...

Really like the third one wicker05.
These are all distinctive pictures of a very photogenic structure but am not sure about the atmosphere you have created in your first three Deemac, they are bordering on the surreal, although they would make excellent illustrations however it's always interesting to see a different perspective (pardon my pun,) on a subject.

Wicker, I like your first shot best. I'm amazed that the chmney structure hasn't blown over yet in some of the winds we get up here. Its a great location for photography (and a nice walk to).

I love the surreal feel of yours, Deemac. :cool: The coloured one in post 9 is my favourite, with the very first photo coming in as a close second.
