From Wikipedia:

Scotland
Scottish banknotes are unusual in that they are technically not legal tender (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_tender) anywhere in the UK – not even in Scotland – they are in fact promissory notes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promissory_note). Indeed, no banknotes (even Bank of England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_of_England) notes) are now legal tender (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_tender) in Scotland. Nevertheless, like debit cards and credit cards, they are used as money because they are commonly understood and agreed to be money.[19] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banknotes_of_the_pound_sterling#_note-Scotnotes) Despite this, Scottish-issued notes are sometimes refused in England and Wales and are not always accepted by banks and exchange bureaus outside of the United Kingdom. This is particularly true in the case of the Royal Bank of Scotland £1 note, which is the only £1 note to remain in circulation within the UK.[20] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banknotes_of_the_pound_sterling#_note-BanknoteDesign)

I've never really seen £1 notes anymore.

Your answer to this will be interesting as I had an argument not that long ago with someone I said that £5 coins can't be used and are only for display.

Funny u should ask that

Last weekend i was handed 2 £5 coins from a woman and i wasn't sure wether to take them or not, so i did, but i wanted 1 for keepsake (so i swapped it with a note) and i left the other 1 in the till and the next day at work i thought i would get hell for taking it but it was gone, a woman knew i had it so asked another assistant if she could have it [lol]

So to answer your question, I don't know [lol]

Excuse my ignorance but what is "legal tender" ?

Coins that are legal tender means whether you can spend them or not. Obviously Xmas choccy coins aren't legal tender or even a 1816 George III shilling anymore.
