I have acquired an LCD monitor, however there is a slight shadow on the screen, most noteable in certain applications such as Microsoft Word.

Ideas about what I can do (if anything), to remedy this are most welcome.

Try adjusting the clock phase and sharpness settings.

That changes the shadow or removes it on mine.

How old is the LCD?

LCD's have a limited lifespan (or the backlight generally does) and when you start to get shadows, dark areas etc. it's generally a sign of the backlight being ready to go. When it does it can be cheaper replacing the monitor than the backlight.

Adjusting the sharpness as Riffman said will usually make it go away, however if it is the backlight the problem will only get worse until it stops completely.
