I'd like to do some political work when I'm older but I'd rather I did it voluntary to improve the lives of other people so I wouldn't be after the pay for bathrooms etc..

Hopefully now it's all out in the open they'll change the rules. I think what bothers me most about all this overspending - and let's face it, it starts at the top with our former Chancellor getting us all further and further into debt - is that we elect these people on the assumption that they are basically honest and responsible. If they had any consciences at all, they would not take advantage of taxpayers in this way. Do none of them ever stop and think - "OK I know I'm allowed to spend as much as I like but it's not my money so I'll spend as little as I can" ? Obviously not.

I'm all for MPs getting all the perks. Like in anything else, if we want the best people then we have to have an attractive pay package to get them into the job as compensation from their own normal backgrounds for what could be a very short 4 year political life. Else from that then run for office yersels if you aren't happy. As for all the details of the expenditures, how does it all compare to all that with what scroungers on the DHSS get, huh?:confused

Historically speaking, it was due to MPs getting paid that enabled people from less privileged backgrounds to take up public office for the persuence of the socialist movement. So don't knock your MPs for claiming stuff, they are entitled to it because it is a part of the legacy that released us from capitalist enslavement.

Rheghead, I hope all that was tongue in cheek. If not you're getting madder by the minute. Presumably we want the best nurses and teachers for ourselves and our children too. I don't see them getting even a decent wage - they can't even afford housing in most parts of the country, let alone garden furniture for their second homes and £300 mirrors.

gettin reasonable expenses paid is fair enough but come on getting 2nd homes all kitted out!!!!!!! getting expenses for a first home is bad enough. think off all that money and where it could go!! just because they are MPs doesnt mean they can get everything handed on a plate they earn plenty money why can they not pay for their own luxuries. because that is what most of it is!!!![mad]

I totally refute this - I paid for my new kitchen, bathroom and telly out of my own savings....

They need the £300 mirrors so that they can see when it's time to remove the orange from their mouth and undo the leather gag!!!.....................
