curious to know as to what exactly is the story behind the rather large unmissable metal feature at Reiss. Kids love it.

Could it have been the 'Violet' beached in 1903?

Story here, about halfway down the page: http://www.caithness.org/caithnessfieldclub/bulletins/2002/ackergill_lifeboat.htm

Or maybe the 'Jean Stephens', beached in 1958? http://www.caithness.org/caithnessfieldclub/bulletins/1984/october/wrecks_of_pentland_firth.htm

It was the Aberdeen trawler Jean Stephen. Beached in 1950`s. All that`s left above the sand now is the main boiler.
The most surprising thing is the lack of photographic archives of this event. Maybe some of our more knowledgeable historians can shed some more light.

Thats brill that, I go down to the beech most days and have often wonderd what it was.
I guesed it would be a boiler as that is the strongest bit I suppose but I printed off a copy and may stick it on that peice of wire that sticks up.
Well done and thank you.

No you`re absolutely right. That was the remains of the hulked MFV Acorn that had lain in the river harbour for ages. It broke its moorings during a SE gale and was driven up under the Service Bridge. That was how it broke up. There was a power cut in the town at the time as I recall, round about new year time early 80`s.

This is a great thread. We take the kids on to riess beach and they have asked us what it is and now we can tell them the story.about how it got there...Is that all thats left or is it buried under the sand....Thanks for the answers......

There are rumours* that there was a secret stash of diamonds and gold headed for Skibo Castle hidden in the depths of the hold. Of course, the sand and tides swallowed the bottom of the boat so quickly that no-one could find out for sure, and the ghostly figure of the boat's Captain still haunts anyone who tries to find the treasure.

*completely unfounded, and started by me. Well, the kids might believe it, eh? [lol]
