Defence O’ Porridge
By Jock Scott.
From the Caithness Courier c. 1951

(dedicated respectfully to Herbert Sinclair, Esq.)

Some start ‘e day wi’ bacon an eigg,
Some hev a fancy for sausage,
Ithers sit doon till a poached eigg on toast,
But A sit doon to ma porrage.

‘E scholars pick clean ‘e bones of a fish
He thinks it conducive to knowledge,
To iths ‘e odour o’ kipper is dear,
But A love ‘e odour o’ porridge.

‘E ignorant deem id food for ‘e peeg,
An’ breakfast on thochts o’ an orange;
Ithers pin faith till potions an’ pills,
But A pin mine till ma porrange.

For porridge build brain, true Scotsmen all knew,
Renowned for their stature an’ carriage,
Ithers may trifle wi’ dentier fare,
But ‘e Scot maun aye ha’e his parritch.
