I have received a document as a pdf file.
A window opens inviting me to RUN or FILE . However when I try either the progress bar only runs for quarter of an inch and then the window disappears. I've been told I need Adobe reader. On going to the internet I can't get it to download.... what do you suggest I do ?

see if you can download foxit reader instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

it is a superb lightweight acrobat reader.

2.1MB instead of 20MB+ for the adobe reader.

hi scaraben,

You can find the Adobe acrobat reader at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html?promoid=BONRM (http://forum.caithness.org/go.php?url=http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html?promoid=BONRM) - just remember to UNTICK the Photoshop Album Starter Edition if you don't want it (they bundle anything with everything these days!).

Kind regards,

Paul Broadwith

Had Foxit for a while and it caused no end of problems for me. Scaraben I'd try it and see how far you get.

I don't actually find Foxit that much quicker which is a shame as I hate the size that Adobe Reader has become. Why does it take a 22Mb download (30 if you add the Photoshop Album Edition) to view a document?

Without wishing to be contentious I would suggest that you may have some underlying issues with your system if you had problems with foxit, it generally plays very very nicely with any PC. Buts as always people do get good and bad experiences with all applications.

Always worth creating a restore point before making changes to a healthy system.

Hi Nick,

PC's are all fine or as fine as they can be with Windows. The problem is actually with the application itself, nothing to do with my machine. Foxit sometimes wouldn't start at all, it would sometimes register itself with PDF's and sometimes it wouldn't. It would sometime3s display documents incorrectly (text in the wrong fonts, pictures not there and pictures on one side or over text).

This was probably over a year ago now so they may well have fixed the problems.

Restore points do little when installing apps such as Foxit (that are pretty small and simple and do little registry updating or system file changes).
