CHRISTMAS

He came intil a world fa’s he’rt wis set
On power an empire joy an’ endless feast;
He wis ‘e Lord o’ all great things an’ yet
He chose ‘e very least !
He micht hey had a palace for His Home
Studded wi’ amethyists, roofed wi’ gold,
Lit up wi’ ringed planets; He is come
Intil a stable cowld !
He micht hev summoned Kings an’ bade them bring
Their prostrate homage till his Infant feet,
An’ lo’ but beists an’ outcast lifeless thing
His noiseless comin’ greet !
He micht hev all creation’s speerit stirred
Wi’ wan loud gospel-cry o’ grace an’ micht,
But He wis willed till be ‘e Silent Word
Born in ‘e Silent Nicht!
He came no’ for our gifts, but for wur sakes –
Takin’ ‘e lowliest things, ‘e best He gave
He giveth Life o’ Life, an’ meekly takes
A Crib, a Cross, a Grave.
