View Full Version : Caithness slang
I returned back to work from my lunch and exclaimed "my bowg is stowed" my workmate looked at me and said"your what is what!" could have been rather embaressing ;) until I explained my belly was full .Any one else got any great caithness words or your own derived words to share with us caithness and non caithness folk?
Can think of ganzie=jumper, putters=legs, and my personal favourite which i know wont be caithness slang but "jesus creepers"=baffies=slippers!!! :)

Well that depends.
"The Gansey is a kind of jumper traditionally knitted for fishermen by their mothers, wives and sweethearts. Each one tells a tale - woven into the complex pattern is the story of that man's village and family."
So I suppose its not a caithness word as such but a word used in caithness, especially Wick and the east coast. And I suppose there was a caithness version of the gansey which would have been exclusive to caithness.
But thanks for pointing it out.
Have you any slang for me Mr golach????

My grandfather and great grandfather were both called David Alexander. David senior's father Andrew Bremner Alexander emmigrated from KEISS in 1880 to NSW. Both Davids were called 'DEDE' (pronounced deed) by the family. Is this a particularly Caithness diminuative form for David?
thanks in advance
