Soldiers from Thurso in the West Indies

One of my forebears served in the army in the West Indies (John Oman - Thurso) and had a daughter born there to Helen Finlayson (also Thurso). Does anyone know how Scottish soldiers ended up out there in the early 18OOs or anything about these families??

My gt gt grandmother was born in the East Indies - amazing how far
our fore-fathers travelled!
