INSOMNIA
by Ivor Waters

One sheep, two sheep, three sheep, four
( I know I've counted these before )
Five sheep, six sheep, seven sheep, eight
( I think I'd better estimate.)

Why do they jump from left to right
In their procession through the night?
What cunning dog or farmer's stick
Drives them to my arithmetic.

I feel my brain grow stale and dull,
A weary lump inside my skull,
But not so lifeless I can sleep
( it's time to get back to the sheep.)

No milk of paradise brings dreams
Of maids by Abyssinian streams,
No Oriental pillow yields
It's soporific fields.

The sheep are symbols, some escape,
Some become thoughts and change their shape.
Until, when thoughts outnumber sheep,
I know I've lost my hope of sleep.

Nirvana will not come tonight,
The squawking gulls have seen the light.
Slumber attacks my eyes in vain,
To hell with sleep. It's day again.
