My gggrandmother Margaret Sutherland and her sister Merran/Marion came from Berriedale born around 1790-1797. Their parents were John Sutherland and Margaret Bruce. The first thing that struck me when I combed the 1841 census for Berriedale was what a large population it had then.
Can anyone enlighten me as to the type of places which Balnabruich, Ramscraigs, Carnfuin and Lower Borgue were. Were they just hamlets or estates which would employ numbers of people. I saw lots of possible relatives in these areas but couldn't pin them down to my family in particular.
